Mani was the greatest avatar of the ancient world and also the greatest portrait painter and calligrapher. It became known as Catharism. It had no leader. Cathars rejected the crass commercialization of Rome 300 years before Martin Luther came to similar conclusions. They believed in a connection between light and spiritual energy, and worshipped a form of Christianity with a Buddhist flavor, rejecting heaven and hell for reincarnation, just like Manichaeism.
The Pope in Rome at first tried to negotiate with the Cathars in France, around Languedoc. After that failed, he declared the first crusade, the Albigensian Crusade, which could have been an even bigger and more horrific ethnic cleansing than Mani’s. The closest thing I can imagine is the Rape of Nanking. Entire towns were destroyed, women and children raped, and then murdered. It didn’t matter if one was Cathar or Catholic. “Let God sort them out,” said the evil Pope.
The last hold-outs were in Montsegur. In 1244, their fort was stormed after a brutal 10-month seige. The 200 inhabitants were thrown on a bonfire.

What Kennedy did instead is launch a series of campaigns to have me fired. Dohrn and her cohorts considered Charlie Manson and Sirhan Sirhan their culture heroes, the same way most Marxists declare the insane John Brown a culture hero for sparking the Civil War. Strange that Brown’s militant abolitionist movement was funded by the founder of Yale’s Skull & Bones. It would seem instigating violence in support of rapid social change is not new. And oddly enough, Brown’s real role was not sparking black slaves to revolt, but sparking Southern States to secede so a war could commence simply by planting that fear in the Southern consciousness the exact same way Dohrn was implanting a similar fear in the minds of Middle American. So please don’t think the Weathermen were ever going to take over America. That was never the plan. The purpose of Dohrn’s celebration of violence, and the reason she got so much traction in the national media, is because her purpose was to paint the counterculture as violent in order that sane Americans would remain fearful of hippies, most of whom were non-violent and only promoting racial equality and ending wars of invasion. The more strident Dohrn’s insane rhetoric, the more effective she was in scaring Middle America. The war continued for years longer than it should have simply because Americans supported it, support propped up by intel psyops, the most important of which involved the creation of the violent Weather Underground.
According to Frank Sheeran, Jimmy Hoffa was considered loveable by Sheeran’s daughters, while the girls steered a wide berth around the Sicilians. After Hoffa’s disappearance, the daughters suspected their father’s involvement in the killing and broke off contact. The film does a masterful job exploring the family dynamics and I find it strange some suggest it’s too long and should have ended with the hit, and not spent so much effort on the collapse of the assassin’s family. Those critics are missing the point.
These matters were made more complex when Jimmy Hoffa switched parties, refusing to back JFK for president. Since Hoffa was influential and urging brother Teamsters to also vote for Nixon, and since the Teamsters were the biggest union in the country, this was a serious concern. The Democratic party had already been stung by negative perceptions post Kefauver. Hoffa was viewed as one of Kennedy’s biggest obstacles in capturing reelection. That and the challenge of winning the state of Texas, home to Big Oil and John Birchers, two elements joined at the hip that were revolting against JFK’s pivot toward world peace.
It’s certainly possible that by speaking out in support of Garrison, Hoffa excited the players inside the Sicilian-CIA connection to action since they both had serious concerns the hit might someday unravel. So when Russell Bufalino explains to Sheeran that “the big boys” have decided Hoffa’s fate, Sheeran responds Hoffa is a big boy.
